Renovating in Andalusia: materials with character

3 July 2026

Many old houses in Cádiz and Andalusia have a quality that cannot simply be bought new: mature spaces, thick walls, inner patios, high ceilings, timber beams, old floor tiles, lime finishes and details shaped by time.

A good renovation is therefore not about stripping an old house completely and standardising it. The key is to understand what should be preserved, repaired, complemented or technically improved.

Especially in historic buildings, valuable elements may be hidden behind later additions: old timber beams above suspended ceilings, hydraulic tiles below newer floor finishes, natural stone, arches, lime plaster or original carpentry.

Traditional materials:
Materials such as lime plaster, timber, natural stone, ceramics, old floor tiles and hydraulic tiles are not only beautiful. They often belong to the way the building was originally constructed.

Lime instead of cement:
In old walls, the choice of material is particularly important. Lime renders are breathable and can absorb and release moisture. Cement renders, by contrast, can trap moisture and damage historic masonry.

New living quality:
A careful renovation does not mean giving up contemporary comfort. Old buildings can become bright, functional and comfortable homes while keeping their character, proportions and material identity.

Conclusion:
Renovating old buildings in Andalusia is a specific architectural task: it combines building history, material knowledge, technical assessment and design. When the existing qualities are recognised early, they can become the basis for a distinctive and durable project.
